Commitment is where the magic happens
For the last month, our team has hopped from idea to idea, trying to find a solution that customers would throw money at us for, chasing what we didn’t fully understand. This search has taken us from Toronto hacker labs to Bay Street to meet with small business owners, solopreneurs, salespeople, startup founders, and partners at major consulting firms.
It’s been confusing, and disorienting at times, going down these rabbit holes, with seemingly everyone having an opinion on what we should be working on, and where we should be investing our efforts.
Although we have gathered some clues from these conversations, talking to so many different segments has clouded the validity of our idea for Prompt.
It turns out that fishing for solutions is probably not the best approach—which we all knew, but nonetheless had to learn the hard way. As Paul Graham, founder of YCombinator, describes:
The very best startup ideas tend to have three things in common: they're something the founders themselves want, that they themselves can build, and that few others realize are worth doing. Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Google, and Facebook all began this way.
So why not build something we want to exist?
Figuring out what we want, required revisiting our shared vision for the world.
Vision
We believe in a world where people are more intentional with interpersonal relationships, thus unlocking their power.
Why did we have trouble committing before?
The original intent of Prompt Cards was to spark more meaningful connections between people, making networking and meeting people for the first time, feel a little less transactional.
We have gone back to the start, exploring what a version of Prompt could look like for people like us. People who aspire to connect with others on a deeper level, beyond just the surface.
We’re still developing these ideas, so we won’t share them in this post
The Importance of Commitment
Through all of this, one thing that has become crystal clear is the importance of commitment.
When you fully commit
You find out what you are capable of
The world conspires to assist you
We’re not there yet, but it feels like there is a path lighting the way.
